Here is a quick map of ideas that I had for my research project. The major branches were of hardware and software.

Updated (again) and final Problem and Purpose statements
Problem: Visually impaired people have a hard time identifying physical features in their surroundings and are in need of a device that will allow them to feel the shape or form of that image.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to research the software and hardware necessary to translate a photographic image into 3d data to form a topological surface comprehensible to the touch of a visually impaired person.

Timeline
This timeline concept evolved from the concept of topography as related to the topography that a visually impaired person would feel from my imaging device. The flags along the timeline represent surveyors flags.

Updated Problem and Purpose Statements
Final Problem and Purpose Statements
Problem: Visually impaired people need a device to photograph their surroundings that will deform to allow them to feel the image.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to research the software and hardware needed to translate an image taken with a handheld device into 3d data to drive pins in the screen of the device to form a topological image comprehensible to the touch of a visually impaired person.
